WEEK 2 — Identity: Image of God & Divine Spark Within

Scripture: Genesis 1:26–27

Theme: Who we are in God and who God is in us.

26And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

27So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

-Genesis 1:26-27

When Genesis describes God’s decision to create humanity, the language slows down and becomes uniquely deliberate. It carries a gravity that sets this moment apart from every other act of creation. Up to this point, God speaks and things simply are — light bursts forth, waters gather, life emerges. But here, the tone shifts. God pauses. God reflects. God speaks within the divine counsel:

“Let us make humanity in our image, after our likeness.”

This phrasing reveals intention, intimacy, and identity blended together. It signals that something unprecedented is about to happen — something that carries the imprint of God’s very being.

No other created thing receives this kind of introduction.

The stars, though magnificent, are spoken into existence without ceremony.

The oceans, vast and powerful, surge into place without divine deliberation.

The creatures of the earth, sky, and sea fill the world with movement and beauty, yet none are invited into God’s inner conversation.

Even the angels, glorious and radiant, are never described as bearing God’s image.

Humanity alone is crafted with this level of divine attention.

Humanity alone is shaped to mirror God’s nature.

Humanity alone is entrusted with God’s likeness as part of its very essence.

Creation is full of wonders, but only one part of creation is formed to reflect the heart, character, and presence of the Creator. Only one carries the imprint of God’s identity within its design. Only one is fashioned to reveal God’s nature to the world.

Only humanity.

Ancient Wisdom Reflection: Divine spark, inner light, higher self

3‑Tiered Interpretation:

Level 1: Imago Dei — humans reflect God’s nature

Imago Dei means “the image of God.” It refers to the truth that God created humanity with qualities that reflect His nature, giving every person inherent worth, dignity, and purpose.

When Scripture says humanity is made in the image and likeness of God, it is describing a unique identity placed within every person. This identity means God built something of His own nature into the human design. It is the foundation of human worth, purpose, and dignity.

The rest of creation displays God’s power and creativity, but humanity carries God’s imprint in a distinct way. The human mind can reason, imagine, and create. The human heart can love, choose, and respond. The human spirit can seek God, recognize His voice, and reflect His character. These capacities exist because God placed His likeness within us.

Being made in God’s image means you were created with the ability to represent Him in the world. You can express His compassion, His wisdom, His justice, and His creativity. You can build, nurture, restore, and lead in ways that reflect His heart. This identity is present from the moment God calls you into existence. It is not earned through behavior or spiritual growth; it is part of your design.

The image of God is the core of who you are. It is the truth that anchors your value and shapes your purpose. It reminds you that your life carries meaning because your life carries God’s imprint.

Level 2: Divine Spark — the inner spiritual essence

The divine spark refers to the life God breathed into humanity, the spiritual capacity that sets human beings apart. This breath is what awakens the soul and gives humanity the ability to connect with God in a personal and relational way.

Because of this divine spark, the human spirit is drawn toward meaning, truth, and relationship. You have an inner awareness that life is more than physical existence. You sense purpose. You recognize beauty. You respond to love. You long for connection with something greater than yourself. These desires exist because God placed His breath within you.

This spark enables you to think beyond survival and imagine possibilities. It enables you to discern right from wrong. It enables you to worship, to pray, and to sense God’s presence. It is the part of you that responds when God speaks and awakens when God moves.

The divine spark is a reminder that God is near and that your life is rooted in Him. It is the spiritual life within you that calls you toward the fullness of who God created you to be.

Level 3: Integrated Identity — created from God and carrying the divine within

Integrated identity brings together the truth of the Imago Dei and the reality of the divine spark. Humanity is shaped by God’s design and animated by God’s breath. This means a person’s value, purpose, and spiritual capacity all come from the same source. The outer design reflects God’s nature, and the inner life carries God’s presence. Together, they form a complete identity rooted in God’s intention and sustained by God’s life within. This integrated identity explains why humans seek meaning, respond to truth, and carry an inner awareness of the divine. It is the fullness of who we are created to be — formed by God, connected to God, and capable of reflecting God in the world.

Outcome: Participants see identity as both God‑given and spiritually awakened.

Closing for Week Two

As we wrap up Week Two, take a moment to notice how far you’ve traveled in just a short time.

You’ve explored the original meaning of the passage, stepped into the symbolic and metaphysical layers, and finally brought both together to form a living, integrated insight for your own spiritual growth.

This is the heart of our journey, not just learning about Scripture, but allowing Scripture to illuminate something within us. Each layer has added depth, clarity, and resonance, and together they’ve shown how ancient words still speak with power today.

Let’s carry that wisdom forward with openness and intention.

Closing Prayer

In the name of the Mighty Beloved “I AM” Presence, “I AM,” in me, Thank You for the light You’ve given us this week, the clarity of the text, the depth of its inner meaning, and the guidance that helps us integrate it into our daily lives.

Open our hearts as we continue this journey.

Help us grow in inner standing, in compassion, and in spiritual maturity.

May the insights we’ve gained take root and bear fruit in the days ahead.

It is so, In the name of the Father, Son, Holy Spirit and Blessed Mother and so it is!

Almighty “I AM!”
